Her swimming journey began when her family moved closer to her father’s workplace, with the agreement that he would coach McKella and her sisters in swimming. Having tried various activities including gymnastics, tumbling, ice skating, and dance, McKella found her true calling in the water. This connection with swimming not only shaped her athletic career but also strengthened her relationship with her father, creating a unique bond through their shared passion for the sport.
One of McKella’s most poignant moments came during her senior year of high school when she broke her school’s record in the 100-meter breaststroke. After narrowly missing qualification for the finals and experiencing profound disappointment, McKella approached her consolation race with renewed determination. In what would be her last competitive high school race, she not only broke the record but shattered it by over a second – an extraordinary achievement in swimming where success is often measured in hundredths of a second. This moment represented years of dedication, resilience, and the culmination of her competitive swimming journey.
Beyond her personal achievements in swimming, McKella has taken on the role of coach for a summer league team, following in her father’s footsteps. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes building proper technique and fostering a love for the sport rather than focusing solely on yardage or competition. This approach reflects her holistic understanding of swimming as not just a competitive endeavor but as a lifelong activity that can bring joy and fulfillment.
Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of McKella’s story is her creation of the “ABC Adventure Challenge.” Facing the prospect of waiting for her then-boyfriend (now husband) to return from his mission, McKella decided to proactively pursue adventures rather than simply waiting. She structured these adventures alphabetically, committing to a new experience each week. This challenge taught her a profound lesson about personal agency – that she had more control over her circumstances than her circumstances had over her. From ice baths to scenic viewpoints, each adventure represented her commitment to living fully and intentionally.
McKella’s journey into education was inspired by her love for coaching. Recognizing the connection between teaching and coaching, she pursued a degree in English and will soon begin her career as a high school language arts teacher. Her approach to education mirrors her coaching philosophy – focusing on building meaningful connections, fostering growth, and creating an environment where students can thrive.
As McKella transitions into this new chapter of her life as a teacher, coach, and wife, she carries with her the valuable lessons learned through swimming, coaching, and her faith. Her story reminds us that our journeys are shaped not just by our achievements but by our connections, our willingness to embrace new experiences, and our capacity to find purpose in serving others. McKella’s message that “you can learn something and teach everyone” encapsulates her approach to life – one of openness, continuous growth, and meaningful contribution.
